Community Attachment and Robust Public Life

Is is necessary for people to feel attached to their communities before they enter into public life?  That’s the implication of the Knight Soul of the Community polling by Gallup.  We’re going to explore that question from every angle in Detroit November 10-11 at the Community Challenge.  Twenty national experts on various aspects of public life will gather for two days to take on the challenge of how to enable every citizen to engage in a robust public life.

What constitutes a robust public life for you?

For me, it’s a combination of being present in heavily used public space (for me, Millennium Park, CTA, even sidewalks); having a way to find out what’s going on in my community and being able to express opinions on that; joining organizations working for change in the community, such as the Active Transportation Alliance and Friends of the Parks; being able to organize with others to get things done; and volunteering for, giving money to, and voting for candidates.

What does it mean to you?
